Qlean Dataset Launches Japanese Lighthouse Image Dataset for Maritime and Infrastructure AI

Visual Bank Inc. (Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Saneyuki Nagai) has released the Japanese Lighthouse Image Dataset under its AI training data solution, Qlean Dataset, through its subsidiary amanaimages Inc. The dataset is designed to support AI development and research, including object detection, image classification, and multimodal AI applications.

The dataset contains photographs of lighthouses across Japan, captured along coastlines, capes, breakwaters, and offshore areas. It includes a range of structures—such as white-painted towers, striped designs, and unmanned facilities—reflecting the diversity of coastal infrastructure.

Each image records real-world coastal scenes where natural elements like sea, sky, and rocky terrain coexist with man-made structures such as ports and harbor equipment. These conditions make the dataset suitable for evaluating visual recognition models in complex outdoor environments.

Because the appearance of lighthouses varies depending on geography, weather, lighting, and time of day, the dataset enables validation of structural recognition accuracy and robustness under environmental variability.

The Japanese Lighthouse Image Dataset is offered as part of Qlean Dataset’s original data lineup, AI Data Recipe, and is available for commercial AI development.

Use Case Examples

Research Applications

  • Object Detection Research for Coastal Infrastructure
The dataset can be used to evaluate object detection algorithms in coastal and port environments. Researchers can analyze detection accuracy and false-positive tendencies under conditions where backgrounds include sea surfaces and sky.

  • Visual Representation Learning in Natural Environments
For multimodal foundation models and vision foundation models, the dataset enables pre-training and evaluation using real-world coastal imagery. It supports analysis of how models distinguish between man-made structures and natural elements, as well as feature extraction behavior under environmental variability.

Industrial Applications

  • Maritime and Port Surveillance AI Development
The dataset can support the development of AI systems that automatically recognize lighthouses in camera footage for port management and maritime safety applications. It can be used to validate positioning and image analysis accuracy for coastal infrastructure monitoring systems.

  • GIS-Integrated Image Analysis Systems
The dataset can serve as validation data for systems that recognize coastal landmarks from images within geographic information systems (GIS) or mapping applications. It supports development of multimodal models combining geospatial data and visual features.

  • Image Classification Models for Tourism and Regional Services
For tourism and regional information services, the dataset can be used to develop image classification functions that automatically identify coastal facilities, including lighthouses. It supports validation of search and recommendation algorithms leveraging regional landscape data.
